The French House
The front of the house (the small house on the far left) faces a beautiful chateau in a park setting (good) and a busy road (bad).
The back of the house is adjacent to a bucolic stream running along the edge of the property (good) and a large block garage (bad).
The interior of the house has heavy timber trusses, high ceilings, stone walls (good) and ladders instead of stairs, vinyl tile, bathroom without a toilet (bad).
The house is really a collection of 3 buildings;
1 - The hundred year old townhouse with two floors of living space, plus an attic and basement
2 – One-storey addition used as living room with low, sloped ceiling and basement (attached to townhouse at main floor). This was originally built as a bike shop.
3 – At the basement level, but above grade, a one-storey light industrial building once used as a forge.
The proximity to the historic chateau means changes to the windows and doors will be scrutinized by the French government and most likely, not allowed. The challenge will be bringing light and views into the house and forge without changing any of the existing openings.
Hmmm … stay tuned for our clever plans.
